Cthulhu/Ktulu

Lovecraft's sketch of Cthulhu

The Call Of Ktulu is a superb instrumental which I think fully captures the spirit of the short story "Call Of Cthulhu" by turn of the century author H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). Read the story a few times, then listen to the music and you'll see what I mean.

It is curious that the title of the song is exactly the same as the short story - other than the spelling of Cthulhu. Other authors such as August Derleth wrote many stories using Lovecraft's creatures from what Derleth called "The Cthulhu Mythos." In the case of many of these authors' stories, however, the spelling of the being's name was changed to Ktulu, perhaps out of respect of the original author. If this is why Metallica changed the spelling, if there was some sort of legal reason or if they eroneously went with the Ktulu spelling by memory of these other stories, is unknown to me.
