If you have yet to do so, sign up for the beta!

Battlefield 1943
February 10th, 2009

News to me, but probably old news to others, the Battlefield series is returning to its roots with a new game called Battlefield 1943, wherein we are returned with a modern 3D engine to the locales of Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and (of course!) Wake Island! Seems a little light on the number of maps, though - they should also at the very least include El Alamein . . .

Get It
August 1, 2005

If you're a fan of the Battlefield series, and you're not sure if you should purchase Battlefield 2 (because of talk of terrible bugs and other problems, or because perhaps you'll need to upgrade your PC just to play), go get it! It is HIGHLY recommended. Yes, there have been some hicups in the software, but none of the issues have made it so I didn't feel my purchase was worth it. Just like with previous Battlefield games, there have been some growing pains, but also like with previous games, Dice and EA and making good on their promise to patch and otherwise fix the issues as quickly as possible.

That being said, the entire series, with the squad-based team play of Battlefield 2, is now almost as sophisticated as Operation Flashpoint...

100 players?!?
Sept 15, 2004

According to a blurb on the Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam sites, Battlefield 2 is planned to have support for up to 100+ players...

Oh, yeah, and if you haven't noticed, DICE up and just bought Trauma Studios, the guys that built Desert Combat. This is cool news for the Trauma Studios guys, good show, but for the rest of us it's probably bad news since we probably won't see DC updated any further... :(

Update: Obviously the plan to have 100+ players fell through, at least so far. But 64 player maps seem like enough!

Battlefield 2 Announced!
April 21, 2004

This news is according to a announcement by DICE, creators of the Battlefield franchise. Hot on the heals of the announcement of their PS2 game "Battlefield: Modern Combat" - DICE has announced that they are even now working on the next "sequel" for the PC to the Battlefield franchise. Reportedly to be called "Battlefield 2", it's to have a new game engine, etc., have a more modern setting/weapons/vehicles and have three different armies to choose from. Read more about it in the official announcement and the GameSpy interview...

Gallactic Conquest v0.3 Released!
April 20, 2004

The newest incarnation of the Star Wa... er, I mean, Gallactic Conquest MOD has been released. I downloaded this today, and it look really sweet! Battles include maps located on the planets of Tattooine and Hoth, simulating some of the large battles in the movies. While very enjoyable looking, these are pretty predictable. More surprising, however, are some of the newer maps. One map has the Rebels and the Empire fighting over control of the Cloud City! On another map you find yourself on Mon Calamari, a very wet world in which boats are of utmost importance (the flags are in the water...). And still another map simulates the inside of an Imperial Destroyer!!!

While playing the various maps, you'll find yourself using many hand weapons and vehicles you'll instantly recognize. Vehicles such as X-Wings, Tie-Fighters, and Snow Speeders abound, Jabba the Hut's floating boats, smaller Imperial Walkers, and even the Millenium Falcon!

Sound like fun? Go get it! Just make sure to download and install the 0.21 full version first, and then install the 0.3 patch!!!

Empires MOD - Joining FPS and RTS!
June 16, 2003

I haven't tried this new MOD out yet, but it sure sounds interesting!

Empires is a revolutionary mod for Battlefield 1942 combining first person action and real time strategy elements. Empires introduces buildable and destroyable buildings, a resource economy system, team commanders, and many other features modders of Battlefield 1942 have declared to be impossible due to no available SDK. With buildable/destroyable buildings, the uninspired point system of regular Battlefield 1942 play is eliminated, leading to fulfilling gameplay where victory is determined by strategy and teamwork, not spawn camping.
